Joseph Calve, a chief marketing officer for two international law firms in a legal career that spans more than 20 years, is joining McGuireWoods LLP this month as the firm’s chief marketing and business development officer.
Calve will join McGuireWoods on June 16 from the New York-based firm of Morrison & Foerster, where he served as chief marketing officer for nearly five years. He will work from McGuireWoods’ New York office pending the relocation of his family to the Richmond area.
“Joe Calve brings a wealth of knowledge and experience in legal marketing and business development to McGuireWoods and we are delighted he is joining us,” McGuireWoods Executive Director Bob Couture said in making the announcement Monday. “Joe has a record of success with three leading international law firms in a career of more than two decades in the legal industry that he brings to the global business and marketing operations of McGuireWoods.”
At Morrison & Foerster, Calve was responsible for all aspects of business development, client relations, marketing, media relations, external and internal communications and competitive intelligence.
Previously, he served as the first CMO at the firm of Proskauer Rose LLP in New York. In five years there, his marketing department was ranked No. 1 for three consecutive years by Marketing the Law Firm magazine.
Calve was the global director of business development for the firm of White & Case LLP in New York from 2003 to 2005.
A former practicing lawyer, Calve also brings solid credentials in journalism. He is a former editor, publisher and senior business executive with American Lawyer Media, where he oversaw a variety of newspapers and other publications and businesses, including The National Law Journal, Texas Lawyer and VerdictSearch.
Calve is a frequent writer and speaker on topics related to law, business development, marketing, competitive intelligence and journalism. He served two terms on the board of directors of the Metro New York Chapter of the Legal Marketing Association and is co-executive editor of Strategies, the LMA’s international magazine.
