On Sept. 9, 2025, the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors adopted a wide-ranging housing initiative aimed at strengthening the county’s economic competitiveness and addressing regional housing challenges.
Building on its commitment to add 10,000 affordable units by 2034, the board directed staff to explore new incentives and strategies to accelerate housing production across all income levels.
Key priorities include streamlining approvals for residential projects, expanding opportunities for entry-level homeownership, encouraging affordable housing development on faith-based properties and strengthening public-private partnerships. The initiative also emphasizes innovative financing tools and increased collaboration with the private sector, recognizing housing as a critical component of workforce attraction and retention.
The county executive will present a comprehensive roadmap in spring 2026, aligning these measures with the upcoming update to the county’s Comprehensive Plan. Stakeholders, including developers, property owners and employers, should anticipate new opportunities for incentives, partnerships and streamlined processes in the year ahead.
