Partners Vishwa Link and David Martin Connelly co-chaired this McGuireWoods hosted conference, which included keynote presentations by Tony Clark, commissioner of the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC), and by Jamie Simler, director of FERC’s Office of Energy Market Regulation.
Our lawyers and other panelists outlined the life-cycle of an electric transmission project both within and outside of regional transmission organizations developed by incumbents and non-incumbent transmission providers. Specifically, McGuireWoods discussed structuring transmission companies and projects; what permits are needed for an interstate project and how to obtain them; state certification applications and potential challenges; best practices for educating the public on project development; and successful condemnation actions.
McGuireWoods has broad experience in all federal and state aspects of transmission project development, construction, operation and cost recovery. Our FERC electric transmission practice includes a focus on representation of clients in all aspects of wholesale electric transmission and sales markets as well as compliance with FERC-approved mandatory federal reliability standards for operating and planning the transmission grid. At the state level, McGuireWoods has since 2002 successfully represented the applicant in obtaining state siting approvals for 52 transmission projects at voltages of 500, 230, 138 and 115 kV, including successful defense of these results in four state supreme court appeals by project opponents, and representing over $1.8 billion of investment.
