Competition law regulators in the European Union and United Kingdom increasingly use artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) to detect and investigate collusion among cartels, McGuireWoods London partner Matthew Hall told Financier Worldwide.
In an interview published in the magazine’s August 2025 issue, Hall said regulators use AI and ML tools to proactively spot lawbreaking rather than rely on whistleblowers. Technology is used to review documents and data from any source and device to identify possible violations, Hall explained.
“Companies need to understand their cooperation and document preservation obligations when investigated, including on a dawn raid,” Hall said. “Companies should prepare by understanding their entire IT arrangements and how employees use devices, including messaging apps.”
