McGuireWoods lawyers and staff will get up early on Friday, May 16, but instead of going to work, they will head to Billingsville Elementary School. More than 120 lawyers and employees from the law firm will pitch in to do repairs, improve the landscaping and help prepare the students for their end-of-the-year exams.
Plans for Friday’s work at the school, which is located in Charlotte’s impoverished Grier Heights, include making a courtyard outside the school’s library, repairing the school yard basketball court and building and repairing art tables. Kevin McGinnis and John McDonald, partners at McGuireWoods, are the co-chairs for the Charlotte office’s Community Outreach Program.
Helms Mulliss & Wicker (HMW), a Charlotte-based law firm, adopted Billingsville Elementary School for its Community Outreach initiatives several years ago. HMW merged with McGuireWoods earlier this year.
“Our Community Outreach Day traditionally has been a time for us to give back to our community,” said Scott Vaughn, managing partner of the Charlotte office. “What’s great is that with the merger, we now have even more volunteers to help make a difference in the lives of the children and teachers at Billingsville.”
A schedule of events includes:
7:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. – Start times for projects, to be determined by team leaders.
8:15 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. – Juice and cookies will be served to the students by McGuireWoods volunteers.
11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. – Lunch served to volunteers and students.
3:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. – Finish projects and clean up school grounds.
