McGuireWoods Receives ‘Smithfield Ham Award’ as Top Large Law Firm Donor in Virginia Legal Food Frenzy

May 21, 2015

McGuireWoods has received the Smithfield Ham Award for the eighth year in a row for collecting more donations – the equivalent of 128,110 pounds of food – than any other large Virginia law firm during the Ninth Annual Statewide Legal Food Frenzy.

The statewide food drive, organized by the Virginia Bar Association Young Lawyers Division, the Virginia Office of the Attorney General, and the Federation of Virginia Food Banks, is a friendly competition among Virginia law firms, legal departments and law schools to raise donations for local food banks.

Participants raised the equivalent of more than 1.3 million pounds of food for Virginia’s needy during this year’s drive, which ran from March 30 to April 10. More than 12.7 million pounds – or 6,350 tons – have been raised since the competition’s inception in 2007.

“McGuireWoods lawyers and staff have been enthusiastic contributors to the Legal Food Frenzy and this year was no different,” said Derek H. Swanson, one of the statewide co-chairs of the Legal Food Frenzy and an associate in McGuireWoods’ Richmond office. “It’s gratifying to see such tremendous support from the entire legal community for our local food banks.”

Last year, members of the Federation of Virginia Food Banks distributed more than 142 million pounds of food and grocery products to individuals in need of emergency food assistance.
