McGuireWoods strengthened its position as a go-to law firm for U.S. and global M&A transactions, earning top five rankings for U.S. deal count and top 10 rankings for global deals in year-end league tables published by Bloomberg and Thomson Reuters.
McGuireWoods made significant gains in U.S. and global rankings in 2018. The firm placed No. 3 for the number of announced U.S. M&A transactions in Thomson Reuters’ tables and No. 4 in Bloomberg’s rankings. McGuireWoods ranked No. 6 for global M&A deals in Bloomberg and No. 8 in Thomson Reuters.
The firm remained a force in mid-market M&A, with top deal count rankings in multiple categories. Bloomberg and Thomson Reuters rated McGuireWoods No. 3 for U.S. deals valued up to $500 million, and the firm ranked No. 4 in Bloomberg and No. 8 in Thomson Reuters for worldwide deals up to $500 million.
In addition, McGuireWoods placed No. 10 for global private equity deals up to $500 million in Bloomberg’s tables and No. 8 for transactions up to $250 million.
“These rankings are a reflection of the firm’s sought-after M&A capabilities and the contributions of lawyers across multiple practices who work together to provide comprehensive deal services to our clients,” said McGuireWoods managing partner J. Tracy Walker IV.
“McGuireWoods has established itself as a leading law firm for advising clients in strategic M&A and private equity transactions,” said David Pusateri, deputy managing partner of the firm’s corporate practice. “We look forward to continuing to deliver innovative, business-minded solutions to our clients in 2019.”
The firm’s significant M&A work included representing Dominion Energy in its $13.4 billion merger with SCANA Corp., which was announced in January 2018, and advising SPX Corp. in its $189 million acquisition of CUES Inc. McGuireWoods lawyers in the U.S. and London also advised Scottish private equity firm Clyde Blowers Capital in its sale of industrial gearing manufacturer Cone Drive and represented McLarens, a leading independent global insurance services company, in UK aspects of a strategic investment by Lee Equity Partners.
McGuireWoods was honored as “Law Firm of the Year” in Mergers & Acquisitions magazine’s Mid-Market M&A Awards. The firm also was honored in Financial Times’ North America Innovative Lawyers Report for its nationwide initiative to connect independent sponsors with capital providers for specific private equity deals.
