Michael J. Anzelmo Partner

Michael represents public utility clients in implementing strategies and obtaining regulatory approvals to achieve their business and litigation goals, including representing clients in regulatory litigation before the South Carolina Public Service Commission and in other regulatory and judicial forums. Michael has led cases for clients in traditional base rate and rider cost recovery proceedings, demand side management proceedings, fuel cost recovery proceedings, and distributed energy resource matters.

Michael is also an accomplished litigator and appellate attorney with significant experience representing clients in complex civil litigation before South Carolina state courts, federal courts, the South Carolina Court of Appeals, and the Supreme Court of South Carolina. 

Immediately prior to joining the Firm, Michael served as Chief of Staff and Legal Counsel to the Speaker of the South Carolina House of Representatives, the Honorable James H. “Jay” Lucas. Michael uses his knowledge of South Carolina state government and judicial system to work with a full spectrum of clients to develop strategies to address their legal and policy business objectives before the South Carolina legislature, state government agencies, and in South Carolina state and federal courts.

Prior to public service, he was a litigation partner at a national law firm and lobby group based in Columbia, South Carolina, where he focused on appellate litigation, consumer finance litigation, state constitutional litigation, and attorney discipline matters. Cases Michael led included representing South Carolina governors and two speakers of the South Carolina House of Representatives in litigation before the Supreme Court of South Carolina.

Before entering private practice, Michael served as a law clerk to the Honorable Kaye G. Hearn, then Chief Judge for the South Carolina Court of Appeals, and as a staff attorney for the South Carolina Court of Appeals.
