McGuireWoods invites you and your colleagues to join Tom Spahn for the annual Norfolk ethics program. This interactive program uses limericks (the last word of which the audience will have to guess) to explore ethics issues involving lawyers’ conflicts of interest rules. The program will address:

  • Identifying the client (in the corporate and insurance contexts)
  • Basic conflicts principles (including duties to prospective clients, “thrust upon” conflicts and adversity to former clients)
  • Types of adversity (including business, financial and “material limitation” conflicts)
  • Conflicts between clients and lawyers (including gifts from clients, settlement practice restrictions, representing unpopular clients, lawyers’ settlement of clients’ claims against them and prospective consents)

Thomas E. Spahn, Counsel, McGuireWoods LLP
Spahn has served on the ABA Standing Committee on Ethics and Professional Responsibility, and has spoken at more than 2,300 CLE programs on ethics and other topics. Tom was selected as the 2013 and 2020 metro-Washington, D.C., “Lawyer of the Year” for “Bet the Company Litigation” by Best Lawyers®.

CLE credit applications will be made on behalf of attendees.
