Matthew Hall Discusses Reaction to the UK Competition Authority’s Banking Inquiry in Global Competition Review

November 6, 2015

Brussels partner Matthew Hall recently weighed in on criticism from the UK parliament over the Competition and Markets Authority’s inquiry into the retail banking sector. Hall is quoted extensively in the Nov. 5 Global Competition Review article, “Politicians grill CMA official over banking,” regarding the line of questioning from parliamentarians.

“It may be good politics, but is bad for the ongoing regulatory process,” he said. “The CMA is recognised worldwide as a high-quality and independent regulator, free of political interference save as set out in statute. MPs should not engage in such grandstanding and public criticism, nor use effectively unanswerable parliamentary hearings to this end.”
