Law360 and The Texas Lawbook published stories on the appointment of Tyler VanHoutan as managing partner of the McGuireWoods’ Houston office.
In Law360’s July 25, 2025, story, VanHoutan discussed his work as an intellectual property litigator, his goals for the Houston office, McGuireWoods’ culture and the competition for talent in the Texas legal market.
VanHoutan said the office managing partner role appealed to him because, as an equity partner, “I’m an owner of the business and I care about how it’s run. I care about this firm, I care about its reputation, I care about our clients and the work we do for them. I care about the future of the firm.”
VanHoutan said he planned to continue the success of Yasser Madriz, who rotated out of the Houston managing partner role after five years in the position. Maintaining the firm’s collegial culture while attracting top talent is a priority, he said.
“When we have meetings, both at the office leadership and firm leadership level, preserving that collegiality is something we always talk about when we’re making business decisions,” he said. “We always consider how a decision is going to impact our culture.”
VanHoutan added: “There are a lot of firms here in Houston, a lot of opportunities, and I’m still here, which I think is fairly telling. I see no reason I wouldn’t spend the entirety of my career here from this point on.
The Texas Lawbook covered VanHoutan’s appointment in a July 9, 2025, story.
