Richmond Associates Help New Judges Prepare for the Bench

June 1, 2009

Richmond office associates participated again this year in the new judges orientation sponsored by the Supreme Court of Virginia. Each year, the court seeks volunteers and hosts mock trials for newly elected judges to gain experience before taking the bench. For the past five years, McGuireWoods has worked with the court to field up to four teams of lawyers.

Current judges participate in order to critique new judges and lawyers. Partner Collin Hite (Financial Services Litigation, Richmond) coordinated the effort between the court and our associates. Nine Richmond associates volunteered this year, including Chris Trible, Don Martin, Eric Martin, Jeff Starling, Lisa Sharp, Martin Boyle, Mitch Morris, Ryan Frei and Virginia Nesbitt. The firm has been asked to assist in selecting a new fact pattern to be used next year, to add some variety to the experience.

“This is a terrific way for our associates to gain valuable real trial experience in front of judges, and to receive critical feedback,” Hite said. “I know the court is very pleased that each year it can count on McGuireWoods to volunteer the most attorneys to participate from any one firm.”
