Decision makers at top corporations gave McGuireWoods high marks in key categories, propelling the firm to a Top 20 performance in the 2015 Client Service A-Team rankings published by Boston-based BTI Consulting Group. It marks the third year in a row and ninth time overall since 2002 that McGuireWoods has made the elite list of 30 firms whose overall client service outperform all other firms by a factor of six.
“In the past year, McGuireWoods has been reasserting its position in the marketplace and among the leaders of client service excellence,” the BTI report concludes.
McGuireWoods jumped five spots in the 2015 survey, which is based on unprompted feedback from leading legal decision makers at large organizations with revenue of $1 billion or more. BTI consultants conducted nearly 317 in-depth interviews between March and September of this year with the highest ranking legal decision makers in those organizations.
Overall, 337 firms, out of the 650 core firms that serve Fortune 1000 clients, are singled out by name for their prowess in at least one of the 17 activities that general counsel and other in-house lawyers say drive superior client relationships. Of those 337, only 30 make the elite list of firms that BTI’s research shows are significantly outpacing their competitors.
“The leaders in client service are sealing their place at the top — pulling away from the pack and impressing corporate counsel with their ongoing prowess,” BTI reports.
McGuireWoods’ performance was driven by especially strong marks in two areas highlighted by BTI under the category “relationship bliss” because clients single them out as most important when it comes to differentiating a firm from its competitors: “Commitment to Help” and “Provides Value for the Dollar.”
“Client service is one of our core values, and it means a great deal to earn praise from those we are privileged to serve,” said Tom Cabaniss, the managing partner of McGuireWoods. “We’re proud of the work we do for our clients and grateful for the confidence they have placed in us.”
The firm’s commitment to extraordinary service also shines through in client comments made to BTI during interviews.
“They are interested in learning about our business, and not just interested in courtroom matters,” the report quotes one unnamed client as saying.
“They are aggressive and do everything to please us as a client,” observed another.
BTI also published a second list of the “most arrogant” firms, based on the same research used for the Client Service A-Team. Interestingly, most of the elite 30 firms noted for delivering superior client service also appear on the most arrogant list. McGuireWoods is one of 13 firms of the elite 30 — and one of only seven of the top 20 — that avoided the dubious distinction of placing on the most arrogant list.
