McGuireWoods Forms Collaborative Affordable Housing Team

April 1, 2021

As an extension of its national real estate capital markets practice, McGuireWoods has formed a multidisciplinary team of lawyers and McGuireWoods Consulting policy professionals dedicated to advising clients on all sides of affordable housing projects, developments and transactions.

The affordable housing team offers the knowledge, experience and strategic insights clients need to navigate the challenging regulations and policies that shape this sector. Drawing on decades of collective experience, lawyers and consultants offer guidance on affordable and mixed-income/mixed-use housing and community development matters. Members of the affordable housing team represent multifamily agency lenders pursuant to the Fannie Mae Multifamily Affordable Housing and Freddie Mac Optigo Lender Targeted Affordable Housing programs, as well as mortgage banking and mortgage brokerage services and letter of credit-backed construction bond transactions. The team also represents clients ranging from closely held, community-based businesses and governmental entities to Fortune 100 companies.

McGuireWoods partners Kristen Kirby and Scott Adams, alongside McGuireWoods Consulting senior vice president Tracy Baynard, lead the affordable housing team, which collaborates with the law firm’s real estate, tax, syndication, land use, public finance and policy attorneys to deliver an integrated approach to client needs.

“Following the COVID-19 pandemic, the demand for affordable housing has been great, the benefits for communities and developers more significant, and the challenges more complex, and these legal issues can be difficult to unravel,” Kirby said.

Added Adams, “Our team interprets local, state and federal laws that affect affordable housing and community development projects and helps clients overcome hurdles from concept to closing.”

“The combination of policy advice and legal solutions that our consulting and legal teams provide for our affordable housing clients under one roof demonstrates our collaborative focus in this industry sector,” Baynard highlighted.

McGuireWoods was ranked a Tier 1 firm for land use and zoning law, public finance law, real estate law and tax law in the 2021 U.S. News – Best Lawyers “Best Law Firms” report. The multidisciplinary team dedicated to the affordable housing industry comprises lawyers who are national leaders in their individual practices.
