August 30, 2022

Carolyn J. Appel, an associate in McGuireWoods’ Washington, D.C., office, will join the U.S. Department of the Treasury’s office of general counsel as an attorney-adviser on Oct. 11, 2022. Her last day at the firm will be Sept. 2.

In her new role, Appel will provide legal advice to Treasury officials and staff on the department’s domestic finance initiatives, which include coronavirus relief programs and other financial regulation. Appel will also work on litigation and congressional oversight issues.

“McGuireWoods has some of the best lawyers in their respective fields and has become a powerhouse in the white collar and government investigations sphere,” she said. “It has been a pleasure working with such accomplished and dedicated attorneys, and I have appreciated every opportunity to expand my practice.”

Appel joined McGuireWoods’ Government Investigations & White Collar Litigation Department in 2018. She handled white collar, securities litigation and enforcement, bank regulation, energy and election law matters. Before joining McGuireWoods, she served on the staffs of U.S. Sens. Tim Kaine and Herb Kohl.

“Carolyn has been a valued member of the team during her time at McGuireWoods,” said partner Todd R. Steggerda, chair of the firm’s Government Investigations & White Collar Litigation Department. “We wish her all the best as she enters the next phase of her career with the Treasury Department.”
