Justice Allies, formerly known as The Greater Richmond Bar Foundation (GRBF), held its annual Pro Bono Awards celebration at McGuireWoods’ Richmond office on Oct. 1, 2026. Among the honorees was Richmond partner Jeffrey Hanna, who was presented with the Benjamin R. Lacy, IV Volunteer of the Year Award, which recognizes volunteers dedicated to pro bono service to the nonprofit sector and beyond.

Hanna’s pro bono work often focuses on life-changing immigration matters. As a co-chair of the McGuireWoods Richmond office pro bono committee, he prioritizes matching firm volunteers with the wide range of opportunities brought to the firm, often by legal aid and client pro bono partners. Justice Allies commended Hanna, stating, “Jeff’s impact on the pro bono community is deep and lasting. His dedication to justice makes him a truly deserving recipient of this award.”

Justice Allies singled out Hanna’s role anchoring the firm’s pro bono partnership with Ayuda, a Washington, D.C.-based nonprofit legal aid organization assisting the immigrant population in the district, Virginia and Maryland. Hanna works with Ayuda on special immigrant juvenile status (SIJS) cases, helping unaccompanied immigrant minors obtain the state court orders needed to pursue federal immigration relief and the attendant benefits. In 2023, Ayuda recognized McGuireWoods with its Pro Bono Impact Award. He has also taken on or helped place immigration and other matters through Kids in Need of Defense (KIND), Legal Aid Works, with the Richmond Legal Aid Justice Center and the firm’s medical-legal partnership with Virginia Commonwealth University and Dominion Energy.

Hanna is a partner in the McGuireWoods Government Investigations and White Collar Litigation department and co-leader of the Banking Regulation & Enforcement Practice Group. He regularly works with the nation’s largest financial institutions on federal and state regulatory and law enforcement investigations, examinations and day-to-day compliance obligations.

The late Benjamin R. Lacy, IV was a member of GRBF Board of Directors and the first recipient of the Pro Bono Clearinghouse Volunteer of the Year award for his service to nonprofits. The GRBF renamed the award for Lacy, posthumously, in 2012. Previous McGuireWoods recipients of the Lacy Award include partner Andrew Gann, counsel Alexandria Cuff and retired partner John Oakley.
