McGuireWoods partner Matt Fitzgerald, co-chair of the firm’s national appellate practice, has been named a “Go To Lawyer” for appellate law by Virginia Lawyers Weekly. The honorees were profiled in a special section published June 26, 2023.
Fitzgerald has briefed, argued and won groundbreaking cases in federal and state courts, including the U.S. Supreme Court and the Supreme Court of Virginia, and earned national recognition for powerfully effective legal writing.
Virginia Lawyers Weekly cited Fitzgerald’s role leading a McGuireWoods team that won a landmark Fourth Amendment case at the U.S. Supreme Court in 2018. The court ruled in Collins v. Virginia that police officers can’t use the Fourth Amendment’s automobile exception to access a vehicle in a home’s curtilage without a warrant. The decision changed the way police nationally are trained to conduct searches.
