Van litigates high-stakes commercial disputes at both the trial and appellate levels. He represents corporate clients in financial services, healthcare, and energy industries in state and federal courts across the country and has extensive experience in all stages of litigation in cases involving contract disputes, business torts, class actions, and real estate disputes.

Van maintains an active pro bono practice in areas including child advocacy and prisoner’s rights and serves on the Rose Council Alumni Board for the Wake Forest University School of Law. Before joining McGuireWoods, Van received his undergraduate degree from Presbyterian College, graduating first in his class, and his Juris Doctorate from Wake Forest University School of Law where he served as the symposium editor for the Journal of Business and Intellectual Property.

  • Drafted trial and appellate briefing on behalf of a large healthcare institution that secured a complete victory in a putative class action involving breach of contract and injunctive relief in connection with the hospital’s assessment of alleged undisclosed fees. While several hospitals across the country have faced similar challenges, our client was the first in the jurisdiction to win at the motion to dismiss stage.
  • Defended large financial institution in two-week bench trial in connection with lawsuit alleging conversion, civil theft, and aiding and abetting fraud of over $4.5 million in international wire transfers of funds, resulting in a verdict of no liability for our client.
  • Represented major gas storage operator in regulatory investigations by various state and federal agencies and civil proceedings stemming from a stray gas incident which included, among other things, preparing for witness interviews, taking and defending depositions, and drafting various dispositive and discovery motions.
  • Secured partial judgment on the pleadings in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Texas on behalf of a commercial client in an action alleging breach of contract, fraudulent inducement, and misrepresentation stemming from an earn-out dispute.
  • Defended a lending institution in multiple federal court class actions principally involving claims related to mortgage securitization practices.
  • Briefed appeal in complex contract dispute concerning the purchase of real estate necessary to build school.
  • Briefed and successfully argued summary judgment motion in the U.S. District Court of South Carolina on behalf of a pro bono client alleging his First Amendment rights were violated by a prison official.
