McGuireWoods Brussels partner Matthew Hall is quoted in a July 14 article published by Global Competition Review covering the first-ever fine issued by the UK Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) against medical professionals. Titled “CMA fines ophthalmologists for competition oversight,” the article details the CMA’s decision to fine an organization of private consultant ophthalmologists for cartel activities, including exchanging information and entering into anticompetitive pricing agreements.
Hall, an experienced practitioner of EU and UK competition/antitrust law, comments that this is not an isolated incident, and that fines for infringement of competition law are “continuing a trend across Europe.” With more and more related cases arising, Hall also encourages professional membership organizations and trade associates of all types to improve compliance programs.
