McGuireWoods Charlotte associate Cort Thompson will join Barings as a director, assistant general counsel for U.S. funds. His last day at McGuireWoods is Jan. 9, 2026, and he will join Barings on Jan. 20.
Since joining McGuireWoods in December 2024, Thompson represented investment managers and other sponsors in the formation, structuring and operation of private funds and related products. At Barings, Thompson will advise on public and private fund offerings.
“I’m very excited that taking a role with Barings allows me to continue working with McGuireWoods and its attorneys,” Thompson said. “In addition to developing critical substantive skills, my role here as part of the fund formation team gave me numerous opportunities to strengthen my client service skills through direct interaction with clients that I wouldn’t have gotten anywhere else. I’m very thankful to the firm and the leaders of the Corporate and Private Equity Department for that.”
Pittsburgh partner Tom Zahn, chair of the firm’s Corporate and Private Equity Department, said: “McGuireWoods is grateful for Cort’s contributions to our Fund Formation & Investment Management Practice Group. He was a valued member of our team, and we’re delighted for him and his new position at Barings.”
