Based in McGuireWoods’ Charlotte office, John focuses his practice on employment counseling and advising clients on complex employment issues arising in connection with transactional matters. He draws upon his experience litigating a broad range of employment disputes and his practical experience as an in-house employment attorney to deliver strategic, business-minded counsel to management-side clients.
John counsels employers on a wide range of labor and employment topics, including employment policies, restrictive covenants, employee performance management and discipline, separations, immigration audits, and reductions in force. He advises employers across jurisdictions throughout the United States and regularly drafts employment, independent contractor, separation, restrictive covenant, and other worker-related agreements. John has significant experience advising on employment matters in private equity and strategic transactions, having counseled on over one hundred buy-side and sell-side transactions, handling due diligence, employment-related counseling, and integration agreement preparation.
John’s litigation experience spans the defense of claims arising under Title VII, the ADA, the ADEA, the FMLA, and the FLSA, as well as the prosecution and defense of non-compete, trade secret, and other restrictive covenant disputes. That breadth of litigation experience informs and strengthens the practical guidance he provides to clients navigating day-to-day workforce decisions and high-stakes transactional matters alike.
Prior to returning to McGuireWoods, John served as senior corporate counsel and sole employment counsel at a publicly traded, Nasdaq-listed corporation with employees and contingent workers across the United States. That in-house experience gives John a practical, business-minded perspective that informs his approach to client matters.
