Eric’s practice focuses on defending clients in environmental and mass tort litigation, as well as litigation arising out of catastrophic incidents.

Prior to joining McGuireWoods, Eric served for nearly 12 years in the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau’s (CFPB) Enforcement Division, including nearly six years as senior litigation counsel. While at the CFPB, Eric investigated and litigated against some of the largest financial institutions and firms in the country, serving as lead or assistant counsel on a total of 10 public enforcement actions that together ordered hundreds of millions of dollars in civil penalties and consumer redress.

Prior to joining the CFPB, Eric served as a law clerk to the Honorable Norman K. Moon of the United States District Court for the Western District of Virginia. While in law school, Eric was a member of the Harvard Legal Aid Bureau and served as a senior online articles editor for the Harvard Law & Policy Review. As an undergraduate at the University of Virginia, Eric was inducted into the Raven Society.

Experience

  • Lead counsel on an investigation into a major financial institution’s prepaid debit card practices, resulting in a public enforcement action ordering a $100 million civil penalty. *
  • Lead counsel on an investigation into a major financial institution’s overdraft practices, resulting in a $122 million public enforcement action, including a $25 million civil penalty. *
  • Assistant counsel on a multi-year district court litigation regarding a major financial institution’s credit card account management practices, resulting in a $9 million civil penalty. *
  • Assistant counsel on seven additional public actions ordering consumer redress and/or civil penalties in connection with enforcing mortgage servicing, mortgage origination, debt collection, credit reporting, and error resolution laws and regulations. *
  • Second chair on a successful trial prosecution of a mail and wire fraud conspiracy involving a lottery scam while detailed as a Special Assistant U.S. Attorney in the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Virginia Alexandria Division. *
