Mason’s practice focuses on the representation of energy and utility clients in proceedings before various state public utilities commissions and the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC).

Mason helps clients navigate the complex and overlapping regulatory frameworks applicable to them. Specifically, he advises clients on compliance with regulatory requirements, regulatory and policy changes that may impact their business, enforcement, and related litigation.

Prior to joining McGuireWoods, Mason practiced as a litigation associate representing companies in a range of business disputes and other matters before various state and federal courts. Previously, he was an Assistant District Attorney in the Philadelphia District Attorney’s Office, Major Crimes Unit. He has served as lead counsel on multiple jury trials and hundreds of bench trials.

Experience

  • Represents North Carolina electric utility companies in proceedings before the North Carolina Utilities Commission seeking certification to construct new facilities for the generation of electricity.
  • Represents North Carolina electric and natural gas utility companies in general rate case proceedings.
  • Advises North and South Carolina electric utility companies on disputes arising from the interconnection of new generating facilities to the utility’s infrastructure.
  • Advises local distribution companies and natural gas marketing companies on the impacts of upstream pipelines’ proposed modifications to their rate schedules and terms of service and represents those companies in disputes arising from such modifications.
  • Advises Natural Gas Policy Act Section 311 and Hinshaw pipelines on various aspects of FERC’s jurisdiction and represents such pipelines in proceedings seeking blanket certificates of limited jurisdiction.
