Mason’s practice focuses on the representation of clients in proceedings before various state public utilities commissions and the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission.
Mason helps public utility and other clients navigate complex and overlapping regulatory frameworks. He advises clients on the impacts of regulatory and policy changes, and represents them in obtaining approvals necessary to execute their business strategies.
Prior to joining McGuireWoods, Mason practiced as a litigation associate representing companies in a range of business disputes and other matters before various state and federal courts. Previously, he was an Assistant District Attorney in the Philadelphia District Attorney’s Office, Major Crimes Unit. He has served as lead counsel on multiple jury trials and hundreds of bench trials.
- Represented multi-jurisdictional electric utility companies in numerous proceedings seeking certification to construct new facilities for the generation of electricity.
- Represented North and South Carolina electric and natural gas utility companies in general rate case proceedings.
- Advised North and South Carolina electric utility companies on disputes arising from the interconnection of new generating facilities to the utility’s infrastructure.
- Represented shippers on an interstate natural gas pipeline in a dispute over the proper interpretation of the pipeline’s tariff before the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, ultimately saving the shippers millions of dollars in surcharges.
- Advises local distribution companies and natural gas marketing companies on the impacts of upstream pipelines’ proposed modifications to their rate schedules and terms of service and represents those companies in disputes arising from such modifications.
- Advises Natural Gas Policy Act Section 311 and Hinshaw pipelines on various aspects of FERC’s jurisdiction and represents such pipelines in proceedings seeking blanket certificates of limited jurisdiction.
