Known for clear judgment, decisive advice and an ability to structure high-stakes transactions that maximize tax efficiency while advancing business objectives, he pairs firmwide leadership with hands-on client service to deliver exceptional results.

Gerald is a trusted adviser to many of the firm’s largest and most strategic clients, including healthcare and energy companies, REITs, independent sponsors and private equity funds confronting complex, high-stakes transactions. Clients rely on Gerald to guide them through the full range of transactional tax matters, including mergers and acquisitions, restructurings and reorganizations, joint ventures, financing transactions, public offerings and corporate and partnership tax planning.

Gerald chaired the firm’s Tax & Employee Benefits Department beginning in 2018 before his appointment as deputy managing partner. Drawing on years of experience leading the firm’s 40-plus tax professionals across multiple disciplines — business tax, private wealth services, employee benefits, and tax controversy — he ensures that clients across the world receive seamless, top-tier counsel on their most consequential matters.

He also chaired the Real Estate Investment Trust Committee of the ABA Section of Real Property, Trust and Estate Law (RPTE) for two consecutive terms and chaired the Partnerships and Limited Liability Companies Committee in RPTE. He serves on the board of trustees of the Southern Federal Tax Institute, a prominent nonprofit group that has provided continuing education for tax attorneys and professionals across the country for more than 60 years.

Gerald is a sought-after thought leader on tax law, particularly with respect to tax reform and recent changes in the law, and a frequent author and speaker who has been honored as a top tax lawyer by The Best Lawyers in America, Chambers USA, Legal 500 United States, and The National Law Journal, which named him a “Tax Law Trailblazer” in 2023.
