Former Federal Prosecutor Garen Marshall Joins McGuireWoods’ Government Investigations Team

February 20, 2024

McGuireWoods continues the expansion of its nationally recognized Government Investigations & White Collar Litigation Department with the arrival of former federal prosecutor and U.S. Navy special forces combat veteran Garen S. Marshall, who joins the firm as counsel. He splits his time between the firm’s offices in Charlotte, North Carolina, and New York City.

Marshall advises organizations and individuals on investigations concerning corruption and fraud allegations. He joins McGuireWoods after serving as an assistant U.S. attorney in the Eastern District of New York, where he prosecuted cases involving allegations of wire and securities fraud, honest services violations, money laundering, organized crime and racketeering, and violent crime. Before becoming a federal prosecutor, Marshall was a white collar litigator at Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom LLP, an Am Law 10 firm in New York.

Marshall served in the Navy as an explosive ordnance disposal technician during Operation Iraqi Freedom and was awarded the Bronze Star, Army Commendation and 12 other military service medals. He also founded two veterans advocacy organizations, including one at New York University School of Law, where he spearheaded efforts that led the law school to introduce one of the nation’s most generous financial assistance packages tailored for eligible veterans.

“Garen has a stellar background in private practice and as a federal prosecutor and his arrival complements an already deep bench of talent at McGuireWoods in this space,” said Jason Cowley, chair of McGuireWoods’ Government Investigations & White Collar Litigation Department.

Said Brian Kahn, managing partner of McGuireWoods’ Charlotte office: “Garen is an accomplished attorney whose commitment to serving clients and the community make him a great addition to our team.”

With a team that includes former U.S. attorneys and other federal prosecutors, enforcement officials and a U.S. deputy attorney general, McGuireWoods’ Government Investigations & White Collar Litigation Department has represented Fortune 100 companies and individuals in some of the most prominent and complicated criminal, regulatory and investigative matters of the past decade.

McGuireWoods ranks among the world’s leading investigations firms in the GIR 100, a guide to top cross-border investigations practices based on independent research by Global Investigations Review. In addition, Law360 has twice named McGuireWoods a White Collar Practice Group of the Year.

“McGuireWoods sets the standard for excellence in high-stakes litigation and government investigations, and I am excited to join this world-class practice,” Marshall said. “I look forward to putting my experience to work for the firm and our clients.”
