Co-leader of McGuireWoods’ Energy Industry Team, Jonathan is a problem-solving litigator and trial lawyer who represents clients in wind, solar, biomass and mineral rights matters.

Handling disputes over royalties, transportation, construction, consumer protection, antitrust, fraud and other complex issues, Jonathan has tried dozens of bench and jury trials in district, circuit and federal courts, as well as in AAA arbitrations. He has been reported in cases in the Virginia Supreme Court, the 4th Circuit Court of Appeals and the U.S. Supreme Court, and he has litigated cases in Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Ohio, Maryland and Virginia.

Jonathan is an American College of Trial Lawyers Fellow, former chair of McGuireWoods’ Business and Securities Litigation Department, former office managing partner of the firm’s Charlottesville office and a former co-chair of the firm’s oil and gas team.

Chambers USA, Legal 500 United States, The Best Lawyers in America and Virginia Business recognize Jonathan as a leading attorney in energy litigation and general commercial litigation. In 2023, The National Law Journal named Jonathan a General Litigation Trailblazer for his groundbreaking work to end Virginia’s system of automatically suspending driver’s licenses for failure to pay court fines and costs.

While earning his law degree from the University of Virginia, Jonathan was honored as a member of the Raven and IMP Societies.
