McGuireWoods, one of the world’s pre-eminent banking and finance law firms, ranked No. 1 worldwide for advising lenders in syndicated loans in 2019, remaining a dominant force in authoritative league tables published by Refinitiv. It marks the second year in a row that McGuireWoods closed more global transactions than any other law firm, according to Refinitiv’s rankings.

The firm advised lenders on 254 global deals valued at $223.6 billion to rank No. 1 in deal count and No. 2 in proceeds. The firm also ranked No. 2 in deal count and No. 5 in proceeds for representing lenders in U.S. syndicated loans, with 187 deals valued at $153.2 billion.

For nine consecutive years, McGuireWoods has ranked among the top 10 U.S. law firms for deal count and dollar volume in lending league tables published by Refinitiv and its predecessor, the financial and risk business of Thomson Reuters. In eight of those years, the firm has finished among the top five in deal count.

McGuireWoods also ranked highly for representing borrowers in syndicated loans in 2019, placing No. 10 in deal count for U.S. transactions and No. 14 for worldwide deals.

The firm’s notable transactions in 2019 included representing Bank of America in a $4 billion revolving credit facility for Netherlands-based LyondellBasell Industries N.V. and LYB Americas Finance; and Wells Fargo Securities LLC in a $1.4 billion incremental term financing for Gray Television Inc., which helped fund Gray’s purchase of Raycom Media Inc.

McGuireWoods’ finance practice is one of the largest in the United States and it continued to grow in 2019 with the addition of partners Chris Molen in Atlanta, Deepak Reddy in New York, Lee Cullinane and Marc Naidoo in London, and Phyllis Young in Dallas, as well as senior counsel Margaret Seurynck in Chicago.

“We are proud of the results our lawyers delivered in 2019, building on our reputation as a market leader providing comprehensive legal services to banking and finance clients,” said Raj Natarajan, chair of McGuireWoods’ Debt Finance Department. “As we continue our growth, we look forward to an even stronger performance in 2020.”

McGuireWoods represents each of the top 10 U.S. banks ranked by assets. U.S News-Best Lawyers named McGuireWoods Law Firm of the Year for banking and finance law in 2020’s “Best Law Firms,” the fourth time the firm earned the honor.
